The founder of Coral Gables, George Merrick was born in Massachusetts. His father Salomon, a Congregational minister, moved the family to south Florida, due to George's poor health. The family prospered with a fruit plantation west of Miami. When George was designing Coral Gables he set aside land for parks, the University of Miami and churches. The Congregational Church has a beautiful location across form the Biltmore. The interior of this church gives one a serenity that would move a person, no mater what their faith might be.
