In a another year or two the fronds will touch the ground . It is spectacular.
I had one that did just that. After 20 years the plant was root bound and I had to take it apart. I wound up with 20 plants. Now I need to find some homes for the new ferns.

The MBG Grows Talipots
The Talipot (Corypha umbraculifera) no longer can be found in the wild. The Montgomery Botanical Garden has at least 10 of them. And I have 2 in our front yard.

First Flower Of A Seedling Waterlily
In the spring a friend gave me a lotus plant and I planted it in a small pool. It grew for three months and then a baby waterlily popped up. A waterlily seed must have hidden in the roots in the lotus. Its 5 to 6 months old and the flowers should now only get bigger and better. Oh, the lotus didn't bloom the season.

Chrysophyllum msolo
I spent some time with Google trying to get information about this tree. I found no images and very little information. It's a slow grower and has eatable fruit. It has some common names and they are stranger then the botanical name. This beautiful tree has a trunk like nothing that I have ever seen.

Breadfruit Growing In Coral Gables
Three summers and we have a tree. Now if we have a warm winter maybe we will have fruit next year. The first year was covered in the cold nights, but now it's too big to protect it.

A New Landscape
A few years ago the new owners removed the mature landscape for something rather plain (take a look). This past year the house was enlarged and now the professionals striped the shrubs and grass so they can sell their perfect landscape. It looks like the same old garden just a little smaller.

One Tree Down. One Tree Up
Last week the city removed the stump and all of the visible roots. This 50 by 50 foot area was cleared of all of the dead Ficus. This will show what they had to remove. It was one of our trees.

What Do I Have?
This is a wheelbarrow full of a palms beard.
Coccothrinax crinita (guano barbudo, guano petate, old man palm, palma petate) is a palm which is endemic to Cuba. I planted this palm 40 years ago when it was 8 inches tall. The beard was perfect for 30 years and then the beard started to fall away. This week the last of the beard dropped.

The Diving Platform Is Now A Waterfall
Olympic divers often used this pool in the 30's. Now most of the diving boards have been removed because of damage and litigation.
This is the far end of the beautiful pool at the Biltmore.
Enlarge the waterfall.

Silky Floss Tree / Chorisia Speciosa
The Chorisia trees started to flower in June and now they are flowering all over the city.
Some are dark pink (almost red) to very light pink.
Then you might find a white one. This one is three blocks from our house and as clear white as they come. Unfortunately I have never seen this one in full bloom.

One By One The Ficus Trees Are Coming Down
Now the city has to remove the stump and all of the large roots that are above the ground. So far it has taken 4 days of hard work. It lost it's last leaves 3 months ago.

Theme Day Topic: Doorways
The door to the basement is a rarity in Coral Gables because we don't have basements. You can strike water within 10 feet down. The owners of this house have a sump pump that keeps the water out. Can you see a problem in this picture?
The back patio is next to that door. Notice the the sign. It gives use a smile.
