Holywood Lignum-Vitae

Common Names: holywood lignum-vitae, lignum-vitae, tree-of-life
Family: Zygophyllaceae (caltrop Family)
I planted this 4o years ago when it was 6 inches tall. Now it's 10 feet tall. We had a lot of rain this summer and the tree gave us a large crop of seed. The seed will not normally sprout under the tree because the seed needs to be eaten by a bird.

Looks Like It's New

This orchid blooms every other month, through the year. And it's been doing that for 60 years.

Kitty Corner From Yesterdays Picture

I painted this street corner, while sitting on the grass across the street, sixty years ago. My oil painting was on a piece of card board. Twenty years later we bought a house that was in my childhood picture. At least once a year the university sends out there art students to paint in our area. Many times I see them painting the same corner that I painted those years ago.

Many of the roots on this old oak are above the ground. They can ruin the sidewalk and the drive ways.

The city trims the roots and repairs the sidewalk for free if the tree is on city property.

No Grass Here

We see more and more gardens that have no grass or very little grass.

An Older House With A New Color

This house reminds me of the painted ladies of San Fransisco. First I saw the color then I looked at the house.

Once A Haunted House

In the 40's this was a haunted house. The couple that owned this house were put in an asylum and there son was lost in the war. At time the city could nothing. I remember walking by the house as it started to decay. Their Packard convertible just sat out in front of the garage, just rusting away. The over grown trees and shrubs really made it look scary. When I was twelve years old I walked into the open house. The house had been visited by most of the young boys (and most likely by a lot of adults). The best part was no one took anything out of the house. When things stared to disappearthe police stopped the visiting. In the 60's the owners passed away and the house was sold. I wounder were the ghosts are now.

Art In The Garden

I wounder if there is another tired tin man in the back yard of this house. They caught my eye and they made me smile.

More Of The Prado Entrance

Built in the 20's, refurbished 08 to 09.

All 3 of the pools within the Prado entrance had cracks but not any more. It's nice to know that the city keeps up with our fountains and pools.

The Prado Entrance To Coral Gables

The city has just finished a repair of this entrance. It was closed for a year.

Now the brides can come back and take there pictures.

Coral Gables Doesn't Have Fall Colors In The Fall

We have a few trees that will have bright colors after a night the 40's. This is as close to fall colors that I can find. This croton looks this way 365 days a year.

October And The Leaves Are Falling

But these are green and they have been falling for the last 3 months.

Two years ago I spotted the white flies on the leaves of this tree. At that time I knew that the white flies would kill the tree.

The basketball hoop makes me think that there is a young boy living in that house.

The fern can't grow on the sidewalk nor can it thrive in the road. This one can crawl up a tree.

Electric Lines vs Trees

Coral Gables is filled with mature trees. It's beautiful, but it makes a problem. The tree huggers want the lines put underground. The city thinks that would be too expensive. Installing a underground grid would kill many trees. Then when a hurricane blows down some of the big old trees, underground lines will fail. Repair would be long and more expensive.

This orchid grows on a palm in our garden. The plant is forgotten most of the time, but when it blooms all eyes are on it.

Poinciana Place

The first time I showed Poinciana Place was on March 11, 2007. Take a look at the porch, it's so nice you might call it a veranda.

This mussaenda starting blooming in May and it will continue to December. Today it looks like spring.

More Contrast

This orchid flower lasts for one day. Yesterday the plants had 56 blooms. The orchid is a Sobralia and it blooms off and on for 3 months every fall.
